Pelvic Floor Therapy and Why You Should Do It
What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and ligaments at the base of your core, creating a sort of hammock from your pubic bone to your tailbone. Your pelvic floor helps to stabilize your core and supports your reproductive, colorectal, and urinary systems, which includes organs such as the bladder, uterus, and rectum.
Why is pelvic floor therapy recommended to pregnant people?
Pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy is a proactive approach to addressing the stresses placed on the pelvic floor muscles as the body adapts to accommodate a growing baby. This specialized form of physical therapy aims to enhance maternal well-being, prepare the body for birth, and facilitate postpartum recovery.
During pregnancy, the pelvic floor muscles can become weak or imbalanced, leading to issues such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual dysfunction. Pelvic floor therapy can help pregnant people learn how to properly coordinate and strengthen these muscles to prevent or alleviate these issues and improve overall pelvic health.
Pelvic floor therapy can also help pregnant people prepare for labor by teaching them how to properly engage and relax their pelvic floor muscles. By doing so, some people may experience a smoother and more efficient labor process, with a reduced risk of tearing and other complications of vaginal birth.
Pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy helps to set pregnant people up for a smoother postpartum recovery; by working with a pelvic floor therapist, expectant moms can establish a plan for postpartum rehabilitation, including exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor and prevent issues such as urinary incontinence and organ prolapse.
