What’s a Postpartum Doula

There are many misconceptions about the need for a postpartum doula - usually there are family members in town for a week or two to help out with the new baby, or you’re sure between you and your partner you’ll be able to manage. Why do you need to just “manage” when you could flourish? Here are some services that postpartum doulas can provide to alleviate some stress and overwhelm during the postpartum period:

  1. We show up for you, not just the baby

Oftentimes, friends and family are excited to visit so they can hold your precious newborn. Sometimes, though, you need some holding too. Postpartum Doulas show up for the birthing person, first and foremost. We’re checking in on your healing, we’re taking note of strange symptoms, we’re giving you some quality adult conversation so your mother in law doesn’t drive you mad. We’re checking in on your support team as well, making sure that  they aren’t being overlooked. Don’t get us wrong, though, we will absolutely hold the baby too if that’s what you need most during a postpartum session.

2.We cook and clean (sometimes; a little bit)

Now, we’re not housekeepers or chefs, but light chores and a quick meal from stuff you already have in your pantry? We’ve got you covered. There are many nights that a postpartum session consists of emptying the dishwasher and cooking a quick and nutritious dinner for you while you take a nap or a shower. Occasionally, we even pick up a grocery order on the way so the fridge can be restocked as well. A chore or two can be counted on, but if you need a deep clean and reorganization of your entire home, definitely contact a professional.

3. Trauma-Informed, Educational Support

Yes, your mother has experienced birth and postpartum before and while their advice might be helpful (if not unwarranted), that doesn’t automatically make them experts. Having a professionally trained doula to share our knowledge and experience with you is something that can be especially beneficial during the postpartum period. Questions like “how much bleeding is normal?” or “is my baby supposed to poop this much?” can be run by your doula for some peace of mind and quality advice. We’ll also let you know when something is out of our scope or if you should contact a medical provider for more help.

Postpartum can be a lot, but it can also be a joyous and exciting time for you and your new baby. Let us help you make the most of it!
